A facile synthesis of 5-arylidene barbituric/thiobarbituric acid derivatives catalyzed by NaOH/fly ash

A newroute to obtain 5-arylidene barbituric/thiobarbituric acid derivatives is reported using a fly ash. It was modified by fusion with NaOH and characterized byXRD, FT-IR spectroscopy. It has been found thatmodified fly ash shows efficient catalytic property in the synthesis of 5-arylidene barbituric/thiobarbituric acid derivatives by Knoevenagel condensation of aromatic aldehydes with barbituric/thiobarbituric acid in aqueous medium. The method is simple, high yielding and cost efficient.
