Beneficial Effects Of Nigella Sativa On The Testis Tissues Of Mice Exposed To UV Irradiation

Ahmed Baker Ali, Talib Hussen Ali

Treatment of male mice with Nigella sativa alcoholic oily seed extract (0.1, 0.2 and 0.5ml/100g of Body weight) alone and with combination with UVradiation ( 366-254nm wave length) was studied to evaluate its effect on sperm production and testes tissues morphology. Mice groups were treated with different dose of Nigella sativa oily extract (0.1, 0.2 and 0.5ml) alone showed an increase in sperm production and became significantly higher at 0.5ml concentration after 15 days treatment. Moreover, it showed a significantly lower(P<0.05) sperm abnormality and sperm death percentage. The protective effect of different Nigella sativa alcoholic oily seeds extract concentrations on mice testes irradiated by different ultraviolet wave length, were investigated. Recovery was not significant on withdrawal of radiation. However antidotes brought about significant recovery in the organs studied. Sperm count, sperm abnormality and death percentage and testes tissue before and after treatment with Nigella sativa for 2,5,10 and 15days, were recorded. The administration of different concentrations( 0.1, 0 .2 and 0.5ml/100mg of body weight of alcoholic oily extract of Nigella sativa seeds were significantly able to minimize the testes cells from being subjected to the degenerative changes with a concomitant increase in sperm count and significant decrease in the percentage of abnormal sperms population, depending on the concentration of treatments, duration and UV- wave length. All three treatment concentrations brought about significant recovery in the organ studied. Individually the(0.5ml/ 100mg/body weight) concentration was the most beneficial in bringing about pronounced recovery .The damage indicated by UV radiation is transient and reversible.
