M.Sajitha, S.Indhumathi, K.Subramani, P.M.Anbarasan
The systematic chemical investigation of aerial parts of Cleome gynandra were found to contain 1-flavone, 2-flavonols,1-flavanone and a flavanone glycoside confirming the general characteristics of Capparidaceae family. The flavonoids are fully characterized as Ferulic acid, Apigenin, Kaempferol, Quercetin, Naringenin and Naringenin-7-Oneohesperidoside. The identification of all these compounds were unambiguously established by chemical and spectral methods including UV, IR, Mass, 1H NMR and 13CNMR. All these compounds were reported for the first time from the aerial parts of Cleome gynandra except Kaempferol and Apigenin. The occurrence of these compounds, has been already reported from the leaves and seeds of this species[5]. The screening of antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extract of the plant Cleome gynandra was carried out against five test pathogens - Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella abony.
