In this study, methanol extract of Solanum trilobatum and Solanum melongena has been evaluated for hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity and against experimentally induced hepatic damage in rats. The hepatic damage was induced to rats using â- galactosamine (300mg/kg bodyweight i.p). The extract (250mg/kg bodyweight)was administered orally for 7 days by gastric intubation to experimental animals. The activities of marker enzymes such as aspartate tranaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and gamma glutamyl transferase (ã-GT) in serum were studied. The status of antioxidants such as catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and lipid peroxidation in the liver of control and experimental animals were also evaluated and compared. Results of the study revealed the elevated levels of serumAST,ALT, ALP, LDH and ã-GT in â-galactosamine induced animals, which might be due to hepatic damage. Oral administration of the extract of ST and SM significantly (p<0.05) reduced the elevated levels of the above marker enzymes in serum. The enzymatic and non enzymatic antioxidants in liverwere restored to normal values after the oral administration of the plants extract. From the results, it can be inferred that the combined extract of Solanum trilobatumand Solanummelongena positivelymodulated the hepaticmarker enzymes and antioxidant activity in â-galactosamine induced liver damage. Histopathological examination of liver sections also proved the effect.
