Effect Of Ultraviolet-Ray On The Spermatogenesis And Testes Tissues Of Albino Swiss Mice

Talib Hussen Ali, Ahmed Baker Ali

The effect of different wave lengths of ultraviolet radiation(UVa , UVb and UVc) for different periods(0, 2, 5, 10 and 15 days) on albino mice testes was investigated. Results obtained by this study revealed that animals exposed to different radiation for different periods were suffered considerable changes in sperm parameters (sperm count , sperm abnormality and sperm death) and the radiation induce damage extended to different testes tissues(seminiferous tubules, basement membranes and germ cells). Significantly reduced sperm count associated with increased sperm abnormality and sperm death percentage in Uv-exposed group as compared with controls, substantially proves the ongoing damage effect of Uv exposed group on testis tissues(necrosis, deformation in all developmental sperm stages). It was found that when the UV-wave lengths decreased(from 366-254nm) and the exposure period increased, the sperm count decreased, the percentage of sperm abnormalities & death increased . While the tissue damage more pronounced. These effects were found to be due to the production of various reactive oxygen species(ROS) by the ionization radiation in the treated mice.
