Investigations on Pharmacologically Important Bivalent Iron and Tin Macrocyclic Complexes : Antimicrobial Activity and Modulation of Radiation Induced Alterations

Ashu Chaudhary, Kumar D and Singh RV

Bivalent tin complexes of macrocyclic ligands have been prepared by the template condensation reactions of 1,10-phenanthroline and different dicarboxylic acids (Malonic, Succinic, Glutaric andAdipic) in the presence of metal ions in 2:2:1 molar ratios. The possibility of potential uses of these complexes as fungicidal and bactericidal studies are discussed. Main emphasis has been given on the protective effect of [Sn(Mac8)Cl2] on radiation induced hematological and biochemical changes in Swiss albino mice. [Sn(Mac8)Cl2] solution was given orally for seven consecutive days prior to radiation exposure. The dose reduction factor (DRF=1.59) for [Sn(Mac8)Cl2] was calculated from LD50/30 values. The hematological parameters were assessed at different intervals of post-irradiation from day 1 to 30. The average hemoglobin (Hb) level, total erythrocyte count (TEC) and total leucocyte count (TLC) in experimental group were significantly elevated as compared to the control group of animals.[Sn(Mac8)Cl2] significantly elevated reduced glutathione (GSH) level in liver against radiationinduced depletion. Treatment with [Sn(Mac8)Cl2] caused a significant decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) formation in the liver, suggesting its role in protection against radiation induced membrane and cellular damage. The results of the present study suggest that [Sn(Mac8)Cl2] modulate the radiation induced hematological and biochemical alterations in Swiss albinomice.
