The ability of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to the catalytic determination of Co(II) was exploited here using oxidation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a chromogenic reagent with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The reaction was followed, spectrophotometrically, by tracing the AgNPs at 405 nm within 5 min after the initiation of reaction. Under the optimal experimental conditions, detection limit and relative standard deviation were 3 ng mL-1 and 4.6% (1.0 µg mL-1; n=7), respectively. The plot of initial reaction rates as a function of Co(II) concentration was linear in the ranges of 6 to 60 ng mL-1 and 0.6 to 350 µg mL-1.
